Chase Farm Hospital protest, Friday 1 April

Defend Chase Farm Hospital services

Friday 1st April 12 noon for a rally between 12 and 2

At The Main Entrance at Chase Farm hospital (directions below)

The BEH (Barnet, Enfield and Haringey) Clinical Strategy has within its proposal, suggested that as part of moving forward, that they close the Chase Farm A&E moving these services across to the main Barnet Hospital, and turn Chase Farm A&E into an ‘Urgent Care Centre’. As I’m sure you are aware, an Urgent Care Centre will not have the same level of nursing, medical and consultant led specialities that a normal A&E would have, and as such would remove the option of hands on direct A&E care, whereby any such patients would then need to be transferred across to Barnet.

This does not have the support of the local GP’s, and would clearly be to the detriment of the local population who would have to travel further afield for the same treatment that they can currently receive at Chase Farm. Apart from this, any such move would increase the pressure on the Barnet A&E which struggles now.

Andrew Lansley, Secretary of State for Health went on National TV at Chase Farm around a year or so ago, and openly stated that he would not let A&E departments close. The BEH Clinical Strategy is based firmly around Andrew Lansley’s Health and Social care bill, for which Nick De Bois has supported by voting with the Government on every occasion.

The proposed closure of A&E at Chase Farm is being seen nationally as a test case, and if this goes ahead, it is likely to be followed with A&E closures across the country.

It is therefore vitally important that we do all we can to change the minds of both BEH and the Government. Unison is the largest union at Barnet and Chase Farm, with nearly a quarter of the workforce as members. However, having gone through a consultation between November 2010 and January 2011 where 250 posts were deleted (admittedly on this occasion with no redundancies using vacant positions) and now going through another consultation with a further 250 posts, this time WITH expected redundancies, staff need residents support against the threatened closure for their sake as well as for our (residents’) sake.

There is a local campaign to maintain services at Chase Farm, but residents of Barnet stand in solidarity with this campaign, not least because we are as likely as Enfield residents to be affected by the closure. Friday’s rally of staff and residents will mark a clear intention of all stake holders to defend Chase Farm hospital at its current level of service to the local population. Therefore it is of crucial importance to make it as big as possible and turn up:
