Yet isn't Barnet a Tory safe seat in which most people support the cuts etc ? Most from Barnet I know are rather pro-cuts.

Dear Charlie, I don't think so. First, as to Barnet being 'safe Tory'. In the general election Labour's Andrew Dismore lost his seat quite narrowly in Hendon and there were some exceptional circumstances in that contest. It's true that Conservative Mike Freer took over the Finchley and Golders Green seat, but he replaced the Labour incumbent Rudi Vis after he died; the seat was the Tories' number one target in the country, and with the swing to the Conservatives it was not surprising that he took it. Chipping Barnet is more like the 'solid' Tory constituency you seem to talk about. The other seats are less so, and could, I think, be won back from the Conservatives. The council is Conservative but there is a big Labour group. In council elections, the tide has been going the Tories' way, but they only took over in 2002 from a Labour-Lib Dem coalition. Many Conservatives have opposed specific policies of the Tory council, including their attempts to axe the residential wardens from sheltered housing schemes, and the recent hikes in senior councillors' allowances - partially reversed after a public outcry. There is no question that many Conservative voters will resist particular cuts proposed by the council, and many, including in the Conservative group of councillors, doubt that the 'One Barnet/Future Shape' privatisation plan can succeed or deliver savings. You might indeed know many who are pro-cuts, but that is a general feeling of many people (including Labour voters), and it is hard to think otherwise when the media repeat government propaganda that cuts in public services are inevitable. The Alliance exists to provide counter-arguments, to make the case for defending public services, and to build links between groups opposing individual cuts. Vicki on behalf of the Alliance

Have'nt seen this site before but I support you in your efforts to get some sort of accountability from this DREADFUL council. I did ask Alison Moore for assistance back in March 2010, although she said she would reply, she hasn't bothered to do so. (No surprises there!) Sorry about the cuts, but there's so much wastage in Barnet, so lots of things just have to go. When I made a claim for under £5,000 against Barnet Council for negligently damaging my property, they spent almost £14,000 on legal advice on dishonestly dodging my claim, and £2,500 on answering my Freedom of Information requests. That's why there is no money left in the kitty, except to pay the councillors allowances.

I'm no longer expecting any reply as I don't think anyone from Barnet Alliance bothers to read this site. I'm still trying to get Barnet Council to obey the law, but without much success as evidently no-one in Barnet Alliance gives a toss about waste of Public money, negligence or injustice. Clearly no-one, except me, thinks the council should comply with its constitution. Who are you Adrian?, What is your interest?

Sorry, Martin, I think Adrian M-L thought you wouldn't get a reply from Alison Moore. I can't comment on that! Were you looking for a reply from Barnet Alliance? Not sure what you were asking! Barnet Alliance certainly cares a great deal about waste of public money, negligence and injustice. We support campaigns on these matters all the time. I actually think that lots of things - such as libraries, children's centres, etc. - don't need to go: Barnet Council could organise things so it doesn't have to make cuts. They don't. Best wishes, Vicki replying on behalf of Barnet Alliance

Vicki, Aahh, someone does read this, after all. Since March I have been expecting some sign of life from the Alliance, maybe even some advice.? I gave up expecting anything from Alison Moore a long time ago. Tried to contact Richard Cornelius, but I am being given the run-around by his secretary, at the mo'. Walkley does not want to talk about LBB's dishonest extraction of a large sum of money from me, and has decided that they have done nothing wrong, LBB clearly also do not care what is printed about them in the Hendon Times, (after all, it's only a local paper). You're right, LBB could organise things so that your members don't have to lose their jobs, but instead, they continue wasting money hand over fist, (and they don't care, cos its public money), I thought that, if the Alliance brought to the council's attention, the various wastes of public funds, persistent breaches of the law, and their constitution, and codes of conduct, you might have a little more clout in your arguments with LBB.(because they certainly don't listen to me ! ) (and, yes, I wrongly thought Adrian M-L was asking about MY future activities - Doh !)

I was listening to "This Sceptred Isle" the other day and the episode on the rise of political parties had me in stitches when it came to the original meaning of the word "tory". I couldn't get the episode to replay, so I looked it up and this is the original meaning of "tory": "outlaw, robber or brigand" Barnet's tory dominated council so well deserves its name - but actually it's not that funny when I think that we all suffer at the hands of these brigands and robbers, both at council level and nationally.

The constituents of Barnet have voted Brian Coleman off the London Assembly. I consider the next urgent step is to have him removed from Barnet Council where his influence is proving disasterous. His rudeness and the manner in which he treats those who do not agree with him, could be considered as institutional abuse and it brings shame on the entire Council. May I respectfully suggest that maybe a petition organised by yourselves be drawn up and circulated amongst Barnet residents. Perhaps, this idea is already under consideration by Barnet Alliance, hopefully so. I find it hard to believe that the other Councillors both Tory and Labour are happy about this dire situation in Barnet.
